Horizon Housing Society
Why do we need this building?
More than 14,000 Calgary households are at extreme risk of homelessness and only a small percentage of rentals in our city contain three or more bedrooms. There are simply not enough affordable housing options with space for families. This property will not only create homes for many vulnerable individuals, but also for many families so they can stay together and grow in a safe and stable environment.
RESOLVE Project
- Build a new apartment building for over 200 people with mental health challenges, limited mobility, families and seniors living below the poverty line, and the working poor.
- Tenants pay rent based on their income so that it’s affordable.
Design:
- Community space provides a place to gather and socialize with other tenants.
- Meeting space is a private place for tenants to connect with support workers.
Support:
- Horizon Housing works with over 15 agencies who refer tenants and provide support.
- Each agency is designated a certain number of units in the building.
- Support services vary depending on the tenant and agency but may include life skills training, mental health support, education opportunities, etc.

Kim O’Brien, Chief Executive Officer
“The simple task of getting your children up and ready for school is often taken for granted. Many families are homeless or at risk of homelessness and there’s not enough suitable housing to meet that demand. Through RESOLVE, we can address this need and the need for other vulnerable people as well.”— Kim O’Brien, Executive Director
“I know my building manager will knock on my door if he hasn’t seen me in a few days and make sure I’m okay.”
