Canadian Natural contributes $2 million to RESOLVE as the Campaign’s largest single corporate donor to date

From our 2016-2017 Report to Community.

Canadian Natural is one of the largest independent crude oil and natural gas producers in the world. The company is committed to a long-term presence in the communities where it operates, contributing to the economy and quality of life in those communities. RESOLVE is extremely grateful to Canadian Natural for providing $2 million to the RESOLVE Campaign — our largest single corporate gift to date — to provide affordable and supported housing for homeless and vulnerable Calgarians. RESOLVE had the opportunity to speak with the team at Canadian Natural about their commitment to the Campaign.

RESOLVE: Why, in these difficult economic times, did the company choose to support this specific cause in such a significant way?

Canadian Natural: Working together with the communities where we operate is important to Canadian Natural. To that end, investments in our operations and communities are planned for the long-term and focused on where we can create the most value. In periods of downturn, we recognize that this commitment to communities is more important than ever.

Canadian Natural focuses on local initiatives that add to the quality of life and wellbeing in the communities where we live and work. It’s been part of our culture since day one. As a Calgary-based company, we believe that supporting vulnerable people in our city to improve their health and wellbeing is an urgent priority. As an important initiative, we are confident that RESOLVE will make a real difference by increasing the availability of affordable housing and support programs for these individuals and their families.

We have a long history of supporting similar initiatives and longstanding relationships with community partners that are working together in RESOLVE. It makes good sense for us to partner with these agencies, government and community leaders to achieve positive, lasting changes in the community.

RESOLVE: How does Canadian Natural’s commitment to Social Responsibility, and to “doing it right”, as outlined in its mission statement, align with the RESOLVE Campaign?

Canadian Natural: RESOLVE is a unique collaboration that brings together agencies, governments and businesses to make a meaningful impact on the lives of many people in need. This collaborative approach towards a common vision and goal aligns well with the way Canadian Natural operates and where “working together” and “doing it right” are key aspects of our mission statement.

RESOLVE: How did your employees react to the news of your gift?

Canadian Natural: Our employees take great pride in helping build stronger communities through employee fundraising campaigns and volunteerism. Not only does this initiative demonstrate our commitment to supporting the communities that we work and live in, but creating safe, stable housing for thousands of people reinforces Canadian Natural’s core value of safety.

RESOLVE: Companies in the oil and natural gas industry often place a high priority on supporting communities in the rural areas where they operate. Why did Canadian Natural feel it was important to support this initiative in the city of Calgary in such a major way?

Canadian Natural: In the last 30 years, we have grown our operations across Western Canada, building strong relationships and investing in communities across more than 160 municipalities — areas where many of our field-based employees live and work. As a Calgary-based company, this city is home to a large number of our employees so supporting this city socially and economically is the right thing to do.

Canadian Natural’s gift sparks additional giving
We love to see our donors collaborating together! TD Securities was inspired by Canadian Natural’s gift to the Campaign and chose to support RESOLVE at their annual “Beef, Bordeaux & Blue Rodeo” event during the Calgary Stampede. The fun-filled event featured the band Blue Rodeo and was hosted by Drew and Barbara MacIntyre, raising over $150,000. This gift is in addition to the $750,000 that TD Bank Group contributed to RESOLVE in 2015.
