Aurora on the Park — affordable, supportive housing

Staff at Aurora on the Park plan a full range of activities for the people who live there, from karaoke nights to hockey games to smudges through their cultural liaison. On this particular day, they’re having a pizza party and making dreamcatchers (see slideshow below).

Aurora is RESOLVE’s third new building and was made possible by the Government of Alberta and StreetSide Developments: A Qualico Company, one of 11 visionary homebuilders who contributed a total of $15.4 million to the Campaign. It provides homes to individuals experiencing addiction, limited mobility and homelessness with supports provided by Calgary Alpha House Society.

Charlene Wilson, the Team Lead at Aurora, says that the fully accessible building creates a community where everyone is able to participate. “As a result, we have seen wonderful friendships built as tenants support each other.”

The accessibility features enable tenants to move around with confidence and independence. They help with daily housekeeping tasks even while using mobility equipment.

Tenants also receive help with medical needs, personal hygeine and meals which has led to improved physical health.

Charlene says that the building offers a “beautiful change in quality of life. The staff here get to share an amazing experience with the tenant each time an empty unit is transformed into a beautiful home. It’s one of my favourite things to witness.”
